Shopping in Xi'an (西安, xī ān)

Xi'an (西安, xī ān) is China's ancient capital, and its souvenirs lean historic: Terracotta Army replicas (兵马俑, bīng mǎ yǒng), stone stele rubbings, and Tang-dynasty style. The Muslim Quarter (回民街, huí mín jiē) is the city's great open-air bazaar — food, crafts and chaos in equal measure.

What to buy in Xi'an (西安, xī ān)

  • Terracotta Army replicas (兵马俑, bīng mǎ yǒng) — from pocket-sized warriors to museum-quality casts.
  • Stele rubbings — ink impressions of ancient stone inscriptions; a scholarly, packable gift.
  • Silk (丝绸, sī chóu) & hanfu (汉服, hàn fú) — Tang-style robes are a fun, photogenic buy near the city wall.
  • Tea (茶, chá), porcelain (瓷器, cí qì) and jade (玉, yù) from the central malls.
  • Cultural-creative (文创, wén chuàng) souvenirs and art toys (潮玩, cháo wán) from Pop Mart (泡泡玛特, pào pào mǎ tè).
  • Snacks — mooncake (月饼, yuè bǐng) and local Chinese liquor (白酒, báijiǔ) make easy edible gifts.

Payment & tax refund

  • Pay with Alipay (支付宝, zhī fù bǎo) or WeChat Pay (微信支付, wēi xìn zhī fù) by scanning a QR code (二维码, èr wéi mǎ); UnionPay (银联, yín lián) and some cash (现金, xiàn jīn) help in the bazaar.
  • Keep your receipt (收据, shōu jù) and ask for an invoice (发票, fā piào) for returns & exchanges (退换, tuì huàn) and the tax refund (退税, tuì shuì).
  • Small stalls may push counterfeit (高仿, gāo fǎng) "antiques" — buy replicas knowingly and keep valuables declared with customs (海关, hǎi guān).

FAQ

Are the Terracotta replicas (兵马俑, bīng mǎ yǒng) allowed home?

Replicas are fine to take abroad; just keep the receipt (收据, shōu jù) and declare if valuable. Real artifacts are, of course, not for sale.

Is the Muslim Quarter (回民街, huí mín jiē) good for bargains?

Very — it is the best place in Xi'an (西安, xī ān) to bargain (砍价, kǎn jià). Enjoy the hunt, but treat "antique" claims with skepticism (counterfeit 高仿).

Tax refund (退税, tuì shuì) available?

At participating stores. Keep the fapiao (发票, fā piào) and follow the airport process in our Tax Refund guide.

Market "antiques" are usually replicas or counterfeit (高仿, gāo fǎng); buy knowingly and keep receipts (收据, shōu jù) and invoices (发票, fā piào). Check your home customs (海关, hǎi guān) rules before traveling.
